I thought Gardens of the Moon was okay, I preferred Deadhouse Gates, although it didn't get really good until the end, and then he killed off the only character in it I liked. I kind of figured he would, but that didn't mean I had to like it
I finished The Eye of the World, I picked up on the Tolkien homages more this time around, although it's still a strong book in it's own right. I'm reading Among Others by Jo Walton, now that is a different book, it's hard to really categorise it as fantasy, except for the fairies, although the author's note at the front asserts that they're the real things, it's everything else that is fantasy. Looking forward to Whispers Underground. |

Deadhouse is a better book IMO as well, and yeah, heart-wrenching throughout, but especially at the end. I'm re-reading it now and it's killing me that I've had so little time to devote to it. I've been reading it for 6 days and am only 60 pages in.

At approx 10 pages a day you could still be reading it by Christmas, Obtuse
I'm almost done with Among Others, it's going to be a hard book to review, more to explain why I love it so much, than for anything else. |

At ten pages a day he'll still be reading the series in ten years
I'm just past halfway in Earth Unaware and really liking it. It's strangely familiar like i've read it before which is kinda weird but good. Nice sense of anticipation all the way through so far which makes it hard to put down. I'll be buying this one most likely. |

I finished Among Others on Friday and that was a stellar book. It's not hard to see why it won the Nebula, she doesn't have the fanbase to get anywhere near the Hugo, and that's a shame because it is head and shoulders the best nominated work. I'm reading The Janus Affair, the sequel to Phoenix Rising, which I reviewed here last year. It's suitably silly so far.

Finished Earth Unaware. Pretty good stuff and reminded me I really enjoyed Cards work.
Just bought Whisper's Underground and will be getting into that tonight. |

I've only ever read Card's Alvin Maker books. I may have to try and fit Ender's Game in there one day. I finished The Janus Affair, Ballantine and Morris were on form. I loved Books interaction with the Ministry Seven, who are really eight. I'm reading Anna Kavan's Mercury. What is it about litfic that values beautiful description over plot and believable, solid characterisation?

Mercury...yeah, well there's about 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. On the bright side I know not to read Anna Kavan again. I've started Hexed (the 2nd of Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid books), anyone who likes Harry Dresden would also like Atticus O'Sullivan, and good as they are the Dresden's don't have Oberon the Irish wolfhound in them.

But he does have Mister and the shaggy dog!
Speaking of Dresden, me thinks London is replacing Chicago as my fav urban fantasy series. Haven't read the Alvin Maker books but you should read Enders Game. Even if you don't like it atleast you can say you've read one of the classics of scifi I downloaded a sample of the first Hearne book after your nice comments. Haven't gotten around to trying it yet. |

I like Mister and Mouse, but they're not as good as Oberon is as a character, admittedly Harry does have Bob, and Atticus doesn't have a really cool talking skull.
The Iron Druid's are fun, disposable fiction. I'm noticing in Hexed that the author is ironing out some of the problems from the first book as well as nicely setting up the 3rd book; Hammered. I hope he keeps the coven of sexy Polish witches around for a bit longer, too. I do intend to read Enders Game. Once I'm done with the 100 Must-Read list I may look at reading all the Hugo winners, and I think Enders Game is one of them. |
