Marcus Fenix. War hero. Decorated Gear. Loyal son. Traitor. As the Locust Horde advances into one of humanity’s last bastions—Ephyra—after ten years of a bloody global war that has seen billions die, Marcus does the unthinkable: he defies Colonel Hoffman’s orders and abandons his post in the middle of the battle in a bid to rescue his father, weapons scientist Dr. Adam Fenix. But Adam is buried in the rubble of a ferocious assault on the Fenix estate, and Ephyra falls to the enemy. As the Coalition of Ordered Governments struggles to defend Sera’s surviving humans from the invading “grubs,” Marcus faces a court martial. Deserting his post in wartime means the death penalty. But his sentence is commuted to forty years in the COG’s most notorious prison—known as the Slab—where a prisoner’s life expectancy is less than two years.

'The Slab' is the fifth and final book by Karen Traviss set in the 'Gears of War' universe. It tells the tale of the events leading up to the imprisonment of Marcus Fenix, his subsequent imprisonment and it also explores the lies around Azura and Adam Fenix's involvement with the Locust.

If you've only read the books and not played the games, and are looking for this book to be a conclusion to the overall story, then you're shit out of luck. 'The Slab' unlike the other books in the series is set in a single timeline(10-14AE). It doesn't carry on from where 'Coalitions End' ends or answer any of the questions that book leaves you with. If you want to know the ending, you need to play 'Gears of War 3'. There is a recap of all the books and games at the beginning but that's a shit way to learn what happened.

'The Slab' is pretty much a prequel to the earlier books and has lots of stuff that would be cool foreshadowing if you read the books in chronological order. As it is, those bits are kinda lame. If I get over my disappointment of the book not continuing the story in anyway and only providing more background, then it's another solid Military Scifi from Karen Traviss. Having not played the first two Gears games, getting to learn more about Adam Fenix's association with the Locusts and his time on Azura was interesting. Marcus's time in the Slab was a bit of a mixed bag. The Prisons' chief Warder and the other inmates were the stars there. The focus really isn't on Marcus but on how the prisoners and staff deal with having to fend for themselves with virtually no outside help. The end when it comes was a bit anticlimactic for me.

It's a pity that Traviss didn't write novelisations of the games, as being able to read the complete story would have put this series right up there next to Dan Abnett's 'Gaunt's Ghosts' series for me. Unfortunately to get the most out of this series of books you need to also play the games.
